TL;DR

  • Identification Rate is the percentage of shoppers at a given funnel event (Product View, Add to Cart, Checkout) who have a known email address on file — meaning you can reach them via email.
  • For most Shopify stores, Identification Rate at the Add to Cart event is approximately 14%. The other 86% abandon without ever entering a recovery flow.
  • Identification Rate is not the same as opt-in rate. It measures reachability at a specific funnel moment, not list growth.
  • Increasing Identification Rate is the highest-leverage action for email recovery revenue — more so than improving email content, timing, or subject lines.
  • Attribuly's Recapture increases Identification Rate for known subscribers whose behavior your ESP pixel is missing. Capture adds incremental identification for anonymous visitors.

Identification Rate: The Email Marketing Metric Most Shopify Stores Don't Track

Introduction

Ask most ecommerce email teams to name their biggest performance lever, and you'll hear answers like: better subject lines, stronger offers, optimized send times.

These matter. But they all operate on the same constraint: the shoppers already in your flow. If your flow reaches 14% of abandoners, a 20% improvement in conversion rate increases recovered revenue by about 3 percentage points of total abandonment. Meaningful, but not transformational.

Identification Rate is what determines how many shoppers enter your flow in the first place. It is the ceiling on everything that follows.

This article introduces Identification Rate as a practical metric, explains how to calculate it, and shows how to use it to forecast incremental revenue and diagnose where your email program is leaving money on the table.

What Is Identification Rate?

Identification Rate is the percentage of unique visitors at a specific funnel event who can be tied to an identified email profile — meaning you could send them an email if that event triggered a flow.

Formula

Identification Rate = Total Identified ÷ Unique Visitors at Event

Where:

  • Unique Visitors at Event: shoppers who triggered a specific event (Add to Cart, Checkout Started, Product Viewed)
  • Total Identified: the number of those visitors who have a known email profile

Example

A Shopify store has 1,000 Add to Cart events in a month. Of those, 140 visitors are identifiable by Klaviyo's native pixel. The remaining 860 are anonymous.

Identification Rate = 140 ÷ 1,000 = 14%

This means 86% of cart abandoners never receive a recovery email — regardless of how good the email is.

Why Identification Rate Is Different from Opt-in Rate

These two metrics are commonly confused. They measure different things.

MetricWhat it measuresExample
Opt-in rateHow many new email subscribers you collected3% of site visitors submitted a form
Identification RateHow many shoppers at a specific event have a known email profile14% of cart abandoners are reachable

Opt-in rate is a list growth metric. Identification Rate is a flow coverage metric. A store can have a large email list but a low Identification Rate at the Add to Cart event — because many abandoners are on different devices, have expired cookies, or never submitted an email on that specific visit.

The Revenue Math: Why Identification Rate Is the Primary Lever

Email recovery revenue can be expressed simply:

Email recovery revenue = Shoppers Identified × Conversion Rate × AOV

Most optimization focuses on Conversion Rate (email content, timing, discounts). But Identification Rate has an equal — and often larger — multiplier effect.

ScenarioIdentifiedConversion RateAOVMonthly Revenue
Baseline1405%$120$840
Improve conversion rate by 20%1406%$120$1,008 (+20%)
Double Identification Rate2805%$120$1,680 (+100%)
Both2806%$120$2,016 (+140%)

When Identification Rate is the binding constraint, improving it compounds every other optimization you make downstream.

How Identification Rate Is Calculated in Practice

Total Identified breaks into two components:

Total Identified = Native Pixel Identified + Incremental Lift

And Incremental Lift comes from two sources:

Incremental Lift = Recapture + Capture

Native Pixel Identified

Profiles that Klaviyo's own tracking identifies — shoppers who previously submitted their email, clicked a Klaviyo email in the last 90–180 days, or have an active cookie from a prior session. This is typically ~14% of Add to Cart events for most Shopify stores.

Recapture (Incremental Known Profiles)

Recapture identifies additional known subscribers — people already in your Klaviyo list — whose behavior your native pixel is missing. This happens when:

  • A subscriber visits on a different device than the one they originally opted in on
  • Their Klaviyo cookie has expired but their email is still active in your list
  • Browser restrictions (Safari ITP, Firefox ETP) prevent Klaviyo's pixel from firing

Recapture closes this gap by matching behavioral signals to existing subscriber profiles using a broader identity graph. These are not new contacts — they are existing subscribers who should be entering your flows but aren't.

Capture (Incremental Anonymous Visitors)

Capture identifies shoppers who have no existing profile in your Klaviyo list — truly anonymous visitors. It matches anonymous sessions to email addresses through an identity network of consented first-party data. These become net-new contacts in Klaviyo.

What the Combined Effect Looks Like

SourceIdentified ContactsIdentification Rate
Native Klaviyo pixel14014%
+ Recapture (known subscribers, missed by pixel)+80+8%
+ Capture (anonymous visitors, newly identified)+120+12%
Total with Attribuly34034%

The numbers vary by store — traffic volume, US visitor share, and how active your email list is all affect the outcome. But the structure is consistent: native identification leaves most abandoners unreachable, and incremental lift closes a significant portion of that gap.

How to Measure Your Current Identification Rate

Step 1: Find your Add to Cart event volume

In Shopify Analytics or GA4, find the number of unique Add to Cart events in the past 30 days.

Step 2: Find how many entered your Klaviyo abandoned cart flow

In Klaviyo, go to your abandoned cart flow → Analytics → "People who received email 1" in the past 30 days. This is your identified count.

Step 3: Calculate

Identification Rate = Flow entries ÷ Add to Cart events

If the result is below 20%, Identification Rate is the primary constraint on your recovery revenue — more impactful to address than email content optimization.

Step 4: Track by funnel event

Identification Rate varies significantly by event:

Funnel EventTypical Identification RateWhy It Matters
Product Viewed8–12%Affects browse abandonment flow reach and retargeting audience size
Add to Cart12–18%Directly constrains cart recovery flow entries
Checkout Started20–35%Higher — shoppers who start checkout have often provided an email
Purchase60–80%High — most purchasers go through Shopify checkout which captures email

The gap between Product Viewed and Add to Cart is where browse abandonment opportunity concentrates. The gap between Add to Cart and Checkout Started is where cart recovery opportunity concentrates.

How to Use Identification Rate (Practical Playbook)

1. Identify which funnel event is your biggest constraint

Compare Identification Rate at each event. The event with the largest gap between "shoppers who triggered it" and "shoppers who entered a flow" is your highest-leverage intervention point.

For most stores, Add to Cart is the primary bottleneck. Some stores with strong checkout completion have already moved the problem to Product Viewed (browse abandonment).

2. Estimate monthly incremental revenue before investing

Once you know your current Identification Rate and your target, the revenue forecast is straightforward:

Monthly incremental revenue =
Additional Identified Shoppers × Flow Conversion Rate × AOV

Example:

  • Add to Cart events: 1,000/month
  • Current Identification Rate: 14% → 140 identified
  • Target Identification Rate: 34% → 340 identified
  • Additional identified: 200
  • Flow conversion rate: 5%
  • AOV: $150
  • Monthly incremental revenue: 200 × 5% × $150 = $1,500

This makes identification investment a forecasting exercise, not a leap of faith.

3. Diagnose retargeting audience leakage

Low Identification Rate at Product View and Add to Cart also means fewer first-party signals reaching Meta and Google. This affects:

  • Retargeting audience size: fewer identified events means smaller custom audiences
  • Match quality: browser-based pixels miss iOS traffic disproportionately; server-side event delivery improves match quality

When Attribuly identifies a shopper and that event is sent server-side to Meta, you recover signals that iOS privacy restrictions would otherwise suppress. This improves audience match rates visibly in Meta Events Manager over time.

4. Clone your best-performing flows for the incremental segment

Shoppers identified through Recapture are existing subscribers whose behavior was simply invisible to Klaviyo. They can enter your existing flows directly — no new content needed, just restored visibility.

Shoppers identified through Capture are new contacts. Consider segmenting them within your existing flow (using a conditional split) so you can apply more behavior-specific content — they respond better to product-specific emails than generic "you left something in your cart" messaging.

Common Mistakes When Thinking About Identification Rate

Mistake 1: Treating Identification Rate as a single site-wide number

Identification Rate at "the site level" is not meaningful — it collapses the funnel into one average. The actionable data is at the event level. A 14% Identification Rate at Add to Cart and a 25% rate at Checkout Started are two different problems with different solutions.

What to do instead: Track separately for each funnel event. Klaviyo flow entry rates give you a proxy for each flow's trigger event.

Mistake 2: Confusing Identification Rate with attribution

Identification Rate measures who you can reach. It is not a credit assignment metric. A shopper can be identified (reachable) but then convert through a paid ad retargeting click rather than through your email — the attribution goes to the ad, but the identification was still necessary to build the retargeting audience in the first place.

What to do instead: Use Identification Rate to understand coverage. Use your attribution model (first-click, last-click, data-driven) to understand which touchpoints drove conversion.

Mistake 3: Optimizing email content before fixing identification coverage

If Identification Rate is 14%, improving your email open rate from 35% to 45% increases recovered revenue by roughly 1.4 percentage points of total abandonment. Raising Identification Rate from 14% to 34% increases recovered revenue by 2× at the same conversion rate. The order of operations matters.

What to do instead: Calculate your current Identification Rate first. If it's below 20%, address identification before investing heavily in email creative optimization.

Mistake 4: Ignoring traffic mix when comparing periods

Identification Rate is sensitive to where traffic comes from. Paid social traffic (especially Meta) has a lower Identification Rate than email-referred traffic or direct traffic, because paid visitors are less likely to have an existing profile in your system. If your paid spend increases significantly, your Identification Rate will appear to drop even if nothing changed in your retention setup.

What to do instead: Segment Identification Rate by traffic source when comparing across periods with major channel mix changes.

FAQs

What is a good Identification Rate for a Shopify store?
There is no universal benchmark because traffic mix, product category, and geography all affect the number. The most useful benchmark is your own baseline at each funnel event, tracked over time. For US-focused DTC brands, a combined Identification Rate (native + incremental) of 30–40% at Add to Cart is achievable. Below 20% typically means identification is the primary constraint on email recovery revenue.
Is Identification Rate the same as email opt-in rate?
No. Opt-in rate measures new subscribers collected. Identification Rate measures what percentage of shoppers at a specific funnel moment have a known email profile — including existing subscribers who visit on a new device or after cookie expiry. A store can have a 5% opt-in rate and a 14% Identification Rate at Add to Cart; both numbers are measuring different things.
What is the difference between Recapture and Capture?
Recapture identifies shoppers who are already in your Klaviyo list but whose current session is invisible to Klaviyo's native pixel. These are existing subscribers, not new contacts. Capture identifies shoppers who have no existing profile — they are matched to an email address through an external identity graph and become new contacts in Klaviyo.
Does improving Identification Rate affect deliverability?
Incrementally identified contacts from Recapture are existing subscribers, so deliverability risk is minimal — they already have a relationship with your brand. Contacts identified through Capture are new to your list and may have lower initial engagement rates. Monitor complaint rates (keep below 0.1%) and open rates for the Capture segment separately. Most brands see acceptable deliverability with behavior-specific email content for this segment.
How does server-side tracking relate to Identification Rate?
Server-side tracking improves how reliably events (Add to Cart, Checkout Started) reach Klaviyo and ad platforms. It does not directly identify more shoppers — it ensures that identified shoppers' events are actually received and processed, reducing the gap between "shoppers Klaviyo knows" and "shoppers who enter a flow." Think of it as reducing leakage in the event delivery layer, separate from the identity layer.
Can I improve Identification Rate without a third-party tool?
To a limited degree. Encouraging account creation, implementing persistent cart data, and improving form opt-in rates all raise native Identification Rate incrementally. But the 14% baseline is largely determined by cookie lifespan and device switching behavior — structural factors that third-party identity resolution is specifically designed to address.
