Why Doesn't Shopify Show All of My Abandoned Carts?
Shopify's Abandoned checkouts page does not contain every shopping cart that a visitor leaves behind. It mainly records incomplete checkout sessions after the shopper reaches checkout and supplies usable contact information. Someone who adds an item and leaves earlier may be a real cart abandoner without ever becoming a Shopify abandoned checkout.

TL;DR
- Shopify distinguishes a cart from an abandoned checkout; its admin list is not a complete count of all cart abandonment.
- Shopify's current documentation defines an abandoned checkout around an incomplete checkout after the customer has provided email information and enough time has passed.
- Cart visitors who leave before checkout or before supplying usable contact information may never appear in that list.
- Capture can identify eligible high-intent anonymous U.S. shoppers who never gave the store an email; ReCapture reconnects eligible returning Klaviyo subscribers whose current session is disconnected.

What counts as an abandoned cart in Shopify?
People commonly use “abandoned cart” for any session in which a shopper adds a product but does not purchase. Shopify's admin uses the more specific concept of an abandoned checkout.
Shopify currently explains that an abandoned checkout is created when a checkout remains incomplete after the customer has provided email information, with the legacy experience considering it abandoned after more than ten minutes. Shopify also notes that items in the cart at the time of abandonment are not necessarily saved in that legacy record.
| Funnel stage | What happened | Likely visible in Shopify Abandoned checkouts? |
|---|---|---|
| Product view | Shopper viewed a product and left | No |
| Cart abandonment | Shopper added a product but never reached checkout | Usually no |
| Early checkout exit | Shopper opened checkout but left before usable contact information was captured | May not be recoverable or listed as expected |
| Abandoned checkout | Shopper supplied email information but did not complete payment | Usually yes after Shopify's qualifying delay |
| Completed order | Shopper completed checkout | No; it becomes an order |
| Suspected card testing or bot activity | Shopify classifies the attempt as abusive | Excluded from the normal abandoned-checkout list |

Why are carts missing from the Shopify list?
The shopper never reached checkout
Cart additions happen before checkout. If the shopper leaves from a product page, cart drawer, or cart page, Shopify may have no abandoned-checkout record to display.
The shopper did not provide an email address
Without usable contact information, Shopify cannot create the same recoverable email path. Checkout settings can allow email or phone as the contact method; a phone-only session cannot receive an email recovery message.
The checkout has not aged long enough
The Shopify definition includes a delay before an incomplete checkout is considered abandoned. A recent test may not appear immediately.
Shopify excluded suspicious activity
Shopify says suspected card testing and bot activity are not included in the standard abandoned-checkout list. High-risk payment blocks can also appear in a separate blocked view.
The shopper completed the order
A checkout that converts before the recovery message is sent is no longer an abandoned opportunity. Compare checkout records with completed orders before labeling the difference as missing data.
The channel or payment path behaves differently
Shopify's native abandoned-checkout recovery applies to supported channels and can behave differently with external payment gateways. Offsite payment confirmation or return-URL problems can create confusing records.
Is the problem tracking, identity, or eligibility?
| Symptom | Most likely category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cart additions exceed abandoned checkouts | Funnel definition | How many shoppers actually reached checkout and supplied contact information? |
| Checkout started but no record appears | Checkout capture or timing | Contact method, qualification delay, test status, channel, and payment path |
| Record appears but no email sends | Recovery eligibility | Email availability, completed order, inventory, shipping, payment error, and automation settings |
| Shopify record exists but Klaviyo flow misses the shopper | ESP identity or flow rules | Profile association, event, trigger, filters, consent, and suppression |
| Returning subscriber adds to cart but appears anonymous | Recognition continuity | Cookie loss, private browsing, device change, and ReCapture eligibility |
| High-intent visitor never supplies an email | Anonymous identity gap | Capture eligibility and compliant activation path |
A practical diagnostic funnel
Measure the same period across these stages:
- Sessions with a product added to cart.
- Sessions that opened checkout.
- Checkouts that supplied an email address.
- Shopify abandoned checkouts created.
- Identified profiles entering the ESP flow.
- Recovery messages sent.
- Recovered orders and attributable revenue.
The first large drop tells you which system to investigate. A gap between cart and checkout is different from a gap between an identified checkout and an ESP flow entry.
Where do Capture and ReCapture fit?
Attribuly does not add missing rows to Shopify's Abandoned checkouts page. It addresses two shopper-identification gaps that the native list does not fully cover.
Capture: high-intent shoppers who never gave the store an email
Capture can identify eligible high-intent anonymous U.S. shoppers and sync qualified profiles plus behavior to supported destinations. This can help stores activate some valuable shoppers who leave before becoming a recoverable Shopify checkout.
Capture is not permission to email indiscriminately and does not identify every visitor. The first 500 identified emails are free, with no credit card required.
ReCapture: existing subscribers whose return visit is disconnected
ReCapture is for eligible shoppers who already exist in Klaviyo but whose current onsite behavior is no longer connected to that profile because of cookie loss, private browsing, browser restrictions, or device changes.
ReCapture reconnects eligible behavior to the existing Klaviyo profile so current flows can evaluate the shopper. It does not create a new subscriber or override consent and suppression.
Attribuly guarantees a minimum 4× return on ReCapture spend, measured in recovered-cart revenue attributable to shoppers ReCapture identified.
| Missing shopper | Native Shopify list | Attribuly path |
|---|---|---|
| Left cart before checkout and never supplied an email | Usually absent | Capture, if the U.S. high-intent visitor is eligible |
| Existing Klaviyo subscriber returns with a disconnected session | May be absent or not linked to the intended ESP profile | ReCapture, if eligible |
| Checkout contains email and qualifies as abandoned | Usually present | Use Shopify or ESP recovery; Attribuly may not be needed for identity |
| Bot or card-testing attempt | Excluded | Do not try to identify or market to it |
How should you measure the opportunity?
Do not divide recovered orders only by the Shopify abandoned-checkout count and call it your total cart recovery rate. That denominator excludes earlier cart abandoners and can hide recognition gaps.
Use separate rates for:
- Cart-to-checkout progression.
- Checkout contact capture.
- Shopify abandoned-checkout creation.
- ESP identification and flow entry.
- Message send eligibility.
- Recovered order and recovered gross margin.

Common mistakes
- Treating Shopify's Abandoned checkouts page as a count of every cart addition that did not purchase.
- Assuming a payment failure always creates a standard abandoned-checkout record.
- Testing and checking the list before Shopify's qualifying delay has passed.
- Comparing Shopify checkout records directly with Klaviyo cart-flow entries without matching funnel stages.
- Trying to solve a broken checkout integration with shopper identification.
- Claiming Capture or ReCapture will populate Shopify's native abandoned-checkout list.
- Sending marketing messages without checking consent, suppression, and destination eligibility.
Next step
Build a stage-by-stage funnel before changing automation. Confirm what Shopify records, then measure which valuable shoppers remain unreachable because they never provided an email or because their returning session is disconnected.
