TL;DR
- ReCapture requires two things before you begin: the Attribuly Shopify app and an existing Klaviyo abandoned cart or browse abandonment flow.
- Setup time: under 30 minutes for most stores.
- After connecting Klaviyo, you simply approve the request inside Klaviyo. No manual API key generation is required.
- You choose which events Attribuly should send back to Klaviyo, such as Add to Cart or Checkout Started.
- Monitor results in the Attribuly dashboard under Shopper Identification and ReCapture.
This guide covers the actual setup flow from installation to monitoring your first results.
Before You Start: Prerequisites
Confirm the following before beginning setup:
| Requirement | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Shopify store (any plan) | Attribuly installs as a Shopify app |
| Klaviyo account with at least one abandoned cart or browse abandonment flow | ReCapture feeds into existing flows — there must be a flow to feed |
If you do not yet have a Klaviyo abandoned cart flow set up, complete that first. ReCapture adds reach to an existing flow — it does not create a new email channel.

Step 1: Install Attribuly from the Shopify App Store
- Open the Attribuly listing on the Shopify App Store
- Click Add app
- Review the permissions Attribuly requests:
- Read products (to access cart and product data)
- Read and write customer data (to match sessions to profiles)
- Read orders (to measure recovery attribution)
- Click Install app to confirm
Attribuly is now installed on your Shopify store. The tracking pixel is automatically injected into your storefront — no theme edits required.
Verify the pixel is active: In the Attribuly dashboard, go to Setup → Pixel Status. You should see a green status indicator within a few minutes of installation.
Step 2: Connect Your Klaviyo Account
Connecting Klaviyo is straightforward. You do not need to manually generate an API key for this setup flow.
- In the Attribuly dashboard, go to Integrations → Klaviyo
- Click Connect
- Log in to your Klaviyo account if prompted
- Approve the request by selecting Allow
Once you approve the request, Attribuly can start sending the selected events back to Klaviyo.
Step 3: Select the Events You Want to Send to Klaviyo
This is the key setup step inside Attribuly.
- In Attribuly, go to the ReCapture setup area
- Select the events you want Attribuly to track and send back to Klaviyo
- Typical events include:
- Add to Cart
- Checkout Started
- other abandonment-related events you already use in Klaviyo flows
As soon as Attribuly identifies one of these behaviors, it sends the event data back to Klaviyo. Once Klaviyo receives the event, it can trigger the corresponding abandonment flow.
Step 4: Enable Shopify App Embed
You also need to enable the Shopify app embed so Attribuly can run correctly on your storefront.
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store → Themes → Customize
- Open App embeds
- Turn on the Attribuly app embed
- Save your changes
Without app embed enabled, the on-site behavior cannot be captured reliably.
Step 5: Set Up Your Klaviyo Flow
At this stage, you do not need to activate ReCapture manually from a separate step. What matters is that your Klaviyo flow is set up the right way for Attribuly's returned events.
- In Klaviyo, go to Flows
- Copy your current abandonment flow
- Set the trigger to Attribution SS
- Update the copied flow and configure deduplication
- Follow the detailed flow setup instructions here: Getting started with Klaviyo
This copied flow is the one that should receive the returned Attribuly event data and trigger the corresponding abandonment recovery flow.
Step 6: Monitor Your Results
Go to the Attribuly dashboard and monitor either of these areas:
- Home
- Shopper Identification → ReCapture
These views let you confirm whether Attribuly is identifying shoppers and whether ReCapture data is flowing as expected.
When the setup is correct, you should be able to see the tracked behavior data show up in Attribuly first, then trigger the corresponding abandonment flow in Klaviyo.
Troubleshooting
No new flow entries after 48 hours
Check: Shopify app embed is enabled
Check: Klaviyo connection was approved with Allow
Check: The events selected in Attribuly match the trigger event in your Klaviyo flow
Check: Your Klaviyo flow itself is active and configured correctly
Check: The copied flow uses Attribution SS as the trigger and has deduplication configured correctly
Lower lift than expected
Common causes:
- The wrong events were selected
- Shopify app embed was not turned on
- The copied Klaviyo flow was not switched to Attribution SS
- Deduplication in the copied flow was not configured correctly
- There has not been enough traffic yet to generate visible results
What to Do After Setup
After setup, focus on validating three things:
- Attribuly is identifying shoppers on-site
- The selected events are being returned to Klaviyo
- The copied Attribution SS flow is being triggered correctly
Once those three are working, you can optimize the flow timing, messaging, and conversion performance inside Klaviyo.
